Baby food!

If you read our last post, you know just how important it is for us to have lots and lots of baby food on hand. One of my favorite money-saving ideas is making homemade baby food. I love it because it is so easy to do and I think it really is quite cost-effective. I did it for Allison and Lauren, and when Megan was getting close to eating solids, I decided to build up a nice supply early on. It was perfect timing, too, because things like sweet potatoes and squash were on great sales (around Thanksgiving). Maybe some day Megan will get around to eating it....or maybe she will skip over the whole baby food phase and dive right into real solids. I guess if that day ever comes, we will be prepared!

By the way, for the record, I have tried store-bought baby food with her too, and she doesn't like that either!

If you are interested to know how to make your own baby food, read below. Otherwise you can stop reading now!

Here's how it works. First you pick what fruit/vegetable you want to use. You can use fresh, frozen, or canned...whatever you prefer/is cheapest. Beware if you use canned to see what else is in there, because you don't want sugar syrup or salt in it. Cook until soft. Then puree it in a food processor or blender. Most foods will need extra water to get the right consistency, so be sure to save any water you cook your veggies in for this. Once you have the consistency you like, just spoon it into ice cube trays, cover with plastic wrap, and freeze! When its time to use it, decide how many cubes your baby needs, warm it up, and serve. You can mix them too, for example, one cube of peas, one of carrots.
